How to Choose the Right Wedding Photographer in Perth (And Why Experience Is Everything)

Choosing your wedding photographer can be surprisingly difficult.

There are a lot of us. We all have websites, beautiful photographs and a version of the same promises about capturing genuine moments, making you feel comfortable and telling your story.

So how do you actually work out who is right for you?

After photographing weddings since 1998, I’ve learnt that choosing a photographer isn’t simply about finding someone whose portfolio you like. The photographs obviously matter, but so does having someone beside you who knows what to do when the day inevitably stops following the plan.

Because it will.

Someone will be late. perpaps something will be left behind, like the bouquet. Yep I have witnessed that.. The weather will change. A microphone will stop working at precisely the worst possible moment and the carefully constructed timeline you’ve spent months planning can disappear within about five minutes.

That’s when experience becomes really important.

Don’t just look at the pretty photos

Of course you want beautiful wedding photographs. Nobody books a wedding photographer hoping for mediocre ones.

What I would avoid, though, is choosing someone based entirely on their best 20 photographs on Instagram. Every experienced photographer has a collection of standout images that look fantastic in isolation.

Instead, ask to see a full wedding gallery.

Look through the getting-ready photographs, the ceremony, family photographs, portraits, reception and everything in between. Pay attention to how the photographer handles different lighting conditions and whether the photographs still look good when the day isn’t providing perfect golden-hour light.

A full gallery tells you far more about what you’re actually going to receive than a carefully selected Instagram feed ever will.

You want to see consistency, storytelling and photographs that feel like they belong to the same wedding.

And that’s the difference. That’s what makes an experienced Perth wedding photographer worth their weight in gold.

Experience matters when the day goes sideways

Weddings rarely run exactly as planned, no matter how organised you are.

I’ve had celebrants arrive late, which meant completely reworking the timeline before the couple’s entrance. I’ve had microphones fail just as a reception was about to begin, limos arrive late, weather change without warning and family members mysteriously disappear when it’s time for photographs.

None of that particularly worries me.

It’s a wedding, not a precise operation.

When something goes wrong, my job isn’t to stand there looking horrified because we’re suddenly 25 minutes behind schedule. I need to work out what can change, what can be shortened, what absolutely has to happen and how we can still get the photographs that matter to you.

Most couples don’t need to know every little problem that’s happening behind the scenes.

They just need someone who can quietly sort it out.

That’s experience.

Your photographer is with you for a lot of the day

Think about how much time you’ll actually spend with your photographer.

They’ll be there while you’re getting ready, when the nerves kick in, as your family arrives, throughout the ceremony, during your portraits and later in the evening when everyone has relaxed, had a few drinks and the dance floor starts becoming questionable.

That makes personality and trust more important than people sometimes realise.

You don’t need to become best friends with your photographer, but you should feel comfortable around them. Being able to relax in their presence makes a difference to your photographs, particularly if you’re not naturally comfortable in front of a camera.

The last thing you need is someone making you feel like you’re performing for them all day.

You don’t need to know how to pose

“I don’t know what to do in front of a camera.”

I hear that all the time.

Fortunately, you don’t need to know.

I’ll give you direction when it’s useful, particularly during portraits, but I don’t want you spending your wedding day feeling like you’re on a photography set. There’s a big difference between giving a couple enough direction to create a great photograph and choreographing their every movement.

The laughing, crying, ridiculous moments, friends carrying on, parents watching their kids get married and all the little things happening around you don’t need much direction at all.

They need someone paying attention.

That’s where I come in.

Perth weddings have their own challenges

Perth is pretty lucky when it comes to wedding locations. We’ve got beaches, wineries, farms, private properties, forests, the Perth Hills and plenty of places where you can get that gorgeous WA light.

Every location brings its own challenges, though.

The light at one venue can be completely different from another. An outdoor ceremony can suddenly become very windy, a summer wedding can be brutally hot and a winter wedding can give you ten minutes of sunshine followed by rain.

Sometimes the weather forecast is simply having a laugh.

After photographing weddings in all sorts of conditions, I’ve learnt how to work with what is actually happening rather than becoming attached to what was supposed to happen.

There are times when I’ll chase the light because it’s worth it. Other times, the best decision is to stop chasing it and get on with the wedding.

Ask to see a full wedding gallery

This is probably one of the most useful things you can do before booking a wedding photographer.

Instagram is a highlight reel. That’s what it’s designed to be.

A complete wedding gallery gives you a much better idea of how your photographer actually works throughout an entire day.

As you look through it, ask yourself:

Do I like the whole gallery, not just the hero shots?

Does it tell the story of the wedding?

Do the colours look consistent?

Are the family photographs good?

Do the reception photographs hold up?

Does the photographer handle difficult lighting well?

Most importantly, does this look like how I want my wedding to be photographed?

You can absolutely admire someone’s work and still realise they aren’t the right photographer for you.

That’s not a bad thing.

In fact, that’s exactly what you want to discover before you book.

Questions I’d ask before booking

You don’t need to interrogate your photographer for three hours, but there are some questions worth asking before handing over a deposit.

How many weddings have you photographed?

Can I see a full wedding gallery?

Have you photographed weddings similar to ours?

What happens if our timeline runs late?

How do you handle bad weather?

What happens if your equipment fails?

How long will it take to receive our photographs?

Who actually edits the images?

And perhaps the most revealing question of all:

What happens when something unexpected goes wrong on the wedding day?

The answer can tell you a lot about the person you’re considering.

Don’t choose a photographer just because they’re popular

Followers don’t photograph weddings.

Awards don’t photograph weddings.

A beautiful website doesn’t photograph weddings.

Your photographer does.

Popularity, awards and a polished website can certainly tell you something, but I’d put far more weight on the actual photographs, the full galleries, the photographer’s experience and how you feel when you’re talking to them.

Price is another one where I’d avoid making assumptions.

The most expensive photographer isn’t automatically the best photographer for you, just as the cheapest isn’t necessarily the worst. You’re looking for someone whose work, personality, approach and experience all line up with what you actually want.

That’s the right fit.

After 28 years, here’s what I know

I’ve watched wedding photography change enormously since I photographed my first wedding on film in 1998.

The cameras are different. The technology is different. Couples find their photographers differently now, and Instagram and TikTok have completely changed the way wedding photography is marketed.

Trends have come and gone, too.

What hasn’t changed is what people ultimately want from their photographs.

They want to remember the people they love. They want to see moments they missed. They want to remember how their wedding actually felt, rather than simply what it looked like.

Most of all, they want to know that the person holding the camera can be trusted when the day doesn’t go exactly to plan.

That’s what experience gives you.

It isn’t simply knowing how to operate a camera or take a technically good photograph.

It’s knowing which photograph matters.

So, how do you choose your Perth wedding photographer?

Start with their work, but don’t stop at Instagram.

Look through complete wedding galleries, talk to the photographer and ask questions that actually matter. Pay attention to how comfortable you feel during the conversation because that person is going to spend a significant part of one of the biggest days of your life standing beside you.

Then think beyond the wedding itself.

When you look at your photographs in ten, twenty or thirty years, what do you want to see?

If you love heavily posed, highly produced photography, there are photographers who specialise in exactly that. If you want someone directing every moment, you’ll find photographers who work that way too.

My approach is different.

I want your photographs to feel like your wedding actually felt — natural, honest, colourful and full of the people you love.

After nearly three decades and hundreds of weddings, I’ve photographed everything from beautiful, perfectly organised days to celebrations where absolutely nothing went according to plan. I’ve worked in sunshine, rain, heat and wind, on beaches, farms, private properties, wineries and everywhere in between.

The weddings that stay with me aren’t necessarily the ones where everything went perfectly.

They’re the ones where the couple eventually stopped worrying about making everything perfect and simply enjoyed being married.

That’s what I want for you.

I’ll take care of the photographs.

You get on with getting married.
